Blacksmith| Derak the Starlit Smith

The Nocturnal Blacksmith

Owner

Derak Jenvar, an elven blacksmith that works silently through the night working on repairs and commissions for travelers thanks to some Silence runes inscribed on his anvil and tools.

He is equally concerned with the function and the appearance of what he works on, always looking to improve the symmetry and shimmer of every piece.

Derak likes to work at night because he believes that the gods watch over his work and he is more in tune with them in his craft when the stars and moon give him light. This is entirely superstition and his susceptibility to conspiracies does not end there.

Wares

Primarily works to restore or improve equipment from customers, though has a couple projects of his own design. Can work on metal armors or weapons over a couple of evenings and the result is a +1 AC to all metal armors, and a +1 to damage if he works on any swords, spears, or axes as well.

Quirks

The smith, Derak, talks very softly. He is so used to silence because of his shop and his work that there is hardly a need to speak up. He may even forget that he is in the radius of silence before coming out to talk to the party.

Description of interior/Exterior

Most smiths work in a shop with thick walls and are found by the loud pinging and banging of their work. The Starlit Smith however does not benefit from the loud publicity, and does not need heavy brick walls to cover the sound.

“A large sign can be easily found walking through this part of town. A shield shaped crest made of wood hangs from an iron rod planted in the ground. It depicts an owl sitting on an anvil under a star filled sky. Behind the sign stands an elven male hammering away at a breast plate on an anvil but it makes no sound after each contact with the metal. The shop itself is made of a wooden frame with canvas draped over, the kiln and tools hang on the eastern side of the tent, and the anvil sits right in the middle of the room. Light blue runes glow and wrap around the entirety of the anvil.”

“As you approach, the elf notices you and continues his work for a moment (talking to the group, though muted by the silence spell) After a while, he visibly remembers that they cannot hear him and emerges from his work laughing at his forgetfulness.”

He speaks in a very soft voice “So sorry, I should never focus on two things at once, I am Derak, the Starlit Smith, how can I assist you?”
